Steven Greer – Before He Was Famous!!
The person behind the extremely well intentioned, “The Disclosure Project” Steven Greer has always been followed by his fair share of controversy, I was still surprised to see Greer pop up when I recently happened across a repeat of an old programme from the "National Geographic Explorer" series; the episode in question was aired in 1994 and was titled, “Searching for Extraterrestrials”.
It was fairly tame and really just the usual Seth Shostak fodder, i.e. 'SETI vs The ETH' with the former smugly portraying believers of the latter as cranks, weirdoes etc.
But……
That wasn’t what caught my attention. What did catch my attention was a younger (but strangely older looking) Greer taking small groups of people out into the Californian desert with the following voice over:
“No telescopes.
No Computers.
The tool is telepathy.
The goal? A very close encounter.”
And in Dr Greer’s own words:
“Primary in the event that there’s a landing, an opportune to go on board. You will - come – on - board, okay John, and err, and you need to stay behind to document that.
Err, I’ll be boarding party member number 1, we just go around, 2, 3, 4, skip you…..”
Then Greer went on to elaborate on how to set the landing/flashlights out in the event of a ‘Close approach,’ of course this was a good 6-7 years before the infamous disclosure project video was shot but I still for some reason found it somewhat alarming. I think it’s probably just seeing the ‘craziness’ that has dogged the UFO phenomenon for so long being practised and heralded by someone whom (regardless what I’d read) I’d always hoped and thought was above such silliness. (I’m not talking about the general skywatching but rather the claims that Greer was in telepathic contact with the ETs in the UFOs and as such was beckoning them to land).
This was at least three years before he ran into copyright infringement claims from the UFO Research Coalition regarding the claim that he, “Improperly duplicated and distributed a copyrighted document referred to as: The Best Available Evidence”. There was a multitude of charges related to this, more of which can be read here.
Or the claims that in Greer's book, ‘Extraterrestrial Contact’ Greer claimed to have been directly briefed about UFOs by R. James Woolsey, the former director of the CIA, at a dinner party. Shortly after Greer published his book with his apparently exaggerated account of what had taken place, Woolsey and others present at the dinner sent Greer a letter trying to set the record straight.

If you browse the excellent UFOWatchdog website then you will also see the details of Greer’s, “Truth For Sale” sleepover in 2004, details of which was as follows:

But like I say I’d always held onto an (unsubstantiated) belief that he wasn’t really as ‘out there’ as had been previously claimed…..

Holy Guacamole, I never knew that either, and I go to the UFOWD site . I was so obsessed with Lindas antics it went right by me.
Well, no wonder with stuff like that the Jefferson Airplane crashed, and credibility sank once again for the movement. I had heard Greer was deteriorating somewhat, I can see why. Hmm 600 USD or 1200 pounds a night for imagining you are communicating with ETs is a little rich for my blood. I had no idea they needed currency.
I can do the same on my porch, and walkover to the fridge for a beer for free.
Now you mentioned VA, that keeps popping up Michael. Woy is from there as well as Fortwynt, I wonder if they heard of this farm or ranch. It seems these people have ranches in Va, Wa, etc with tours and fees. Atto mentioned that the last pic he sent of that pretty lap design came from the disclosure people, the new guy heading it. He never spoke more after that. Totally evades my questions. I wonder, would they stoop to a hoax to push for disclosure?
Anyway Michael keep up the great work! You are a brilliant writer and thinker.
Ufology ney..mankind needs more like you.

Thanks for posting the video clip. Steven Greer is UFOlogy's own worst enemy. What really bothers me is how willing he is to humiliate himself, and the rest of humanity by proxy, as he grovels before these alleged entities.
It's all truly sad.

Hi Michael,
another good blog entry, but...
I find it amazing that anyone who has had a serious interest in ufology for a year or more could be oblivious to details such as this?
I don't mean that as a personal criticism, but a general observation on ufology as a whole.
I am even more concerned that people who _are_ aware of such details (not only in respect to Greer or the other characters listed at UFO Watchdog) continue to lend support to these characters. I can only conclude that these hard-core supporters are;
- amongst the most gullible people on earth, or;
- mentally disturbed, or;
- benefiting directly or indirectly from the scam, or;
- just treating ufology as a form of entertainment, like watching a few episodes of 'The X files'.
I suspect that the bulk of them will fall into the last of the options above.
Cheers,
Joe
Hi Joe, of course I was aware of it but not that he was peddling his dubious *wares* as early as ’94 on national television.
The post was to vocalise my surprise at this revelation (to me) and also how alarming it was to actually see Greer spouting these claims publicly. The UFOWatchdog stuff was for the benefit of others (truth be known so is everything I/we write). I’ve got a copy of an email to a UFO list back in the 90’s in which Greer’s associates condemn his views and completely disown/separate his views from their own, the specific details elude me at present but I’ll add it to my ever-increasing, “to do” list.
Thanks for stopping by and your comments are always appreciated.
Cheers.
well, I read Greer's books and I really believe he got in contact with the aliens. And you know why? Because I know already dozens of people who did. And it's very simple and normal. It's in the same way you feel the thoughts of your beloved one, or you feel your mom is sick. I've done many times meditations with them and they are really wonderful. I'm not worried about Greer's mental health as I'm not worried about mine. I'm also a scientist and I dare to believe in my own perceptions.
About the prices he's asking for his work, I'm reminding you that he has the right to set up any price in the world as much as you have the right to refuse it. The rest is envy and gossips.
Mey Lee.
p.s. Read the message of the aliens: Decide whether we should show up!
It will clear up your doubts.
